Gary returned to Willa’s previous room to find the scene under investigation. Even though the room was in chaos, there wasn’t much to find.

Vamps were notoriously hard to track. They had no signature scent. If you were lucky, they’d fed off a human recently and you could track the human’s scent, which they shed like dandruff.

Abner didn’t make that kind of mistake.

If he didn’t want to kill Willa, he was here to see Rose.

Had Abner and Rose been working together all along? Was her mother involved?

That didn’t make sense. If Rose had wanted Willa dead, she could’ve killed Willa at any time and made it look like an accident.

This must be something more. Something personal. Although nothing about Abner’s usual mode of operating suggested the least bit of sentimentality.

And what about him and Rose? Had Rose asked pose as her fiancé for reasons related to this case? It seemed too great a coincidence not to be related.

Instead of returning to the office, he stopped by his place. The way the two nurses had been staring at him, he’d wondered if he had spinach stuck in his teeth. Naturally that was impossible, because spinach made him sick.

His bathroom mirror confirmed that he looked the same as when he set out this morning. He took a sniff at his underarm. He didn’t smell anything. He changed his shirt, just in case.

Before returning to the office, he stopped by to see his friend Liv. A year ago, she was the only human in Icy Cap. Now she had expanded her hair salon to include a boutique on the property next to his.

He stepped inside her front door, triggering a little bell.

“Be right there!” Liv called from behind a curtain.

Gary hadn’t been in the boutique in a while. It was jammed with dresses and all manner of feminine underthings. He felt completely out of place.

A powerful urge to buy something sexy for Rose built deep in his brain. He hadn’t a clue what she would like, but he’d have liked to see her in one of everything.

“Hello, stranger.” Liv dropped an armload of lacy undergarments on the counter before coming around and giving him a hug. “It’s so good to see you. Leo will be crushed he missed you.”

“How is he?”

“The same. Tristan’s coaching his peewee hockey team. Anytime you’re looking for some entertainment on a Saturday night, stop by. Two teams of five-year-old boys armed with sticks? It’s my guaranteed laugh for the week.” She paused. “Everything OK?”

Gary shifted his feet and rubbed the back of his neck. He was worried.

“How’s Tristan?”

“Busy. Any time you get this many hotheaded paranorms and gambling together, there’s bound to be trouble. But I think he likes it. Never a dull moment.”

His friend Tristan was an Icy Cap deputy on loan to the Ice Palace Casino, run by the trolls twenty miles out of town. Being adjacent to a mining camp made things at the casino reliably busy.

“Did you need him? He’s home sleeping now, but only for you would I wake a sleepy shifter.
